Hi! I’m Suryo. I’m a PhD candidate at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University (University Park). I’m advised by Dr. Mahanth Gowda. My doctoral research is focused on wireless sensing, IoT, and machine learning, but more broadly, I’m interested in systems development, edge computing, software engineering, wearable technology, and system-on-chip (SoC) programming. Through my PhD years, I have also been a teaching assistant for various courses including beginner and intermediate level Python, and grad-level IoT and wireless sensing.
In the summer of 2024, I was a PhD Software Engineering intern at Meta, where I built prototypes that connected electromyographic (EMG) wristbands with their smartglasses line of products. This broadly encompassed C++ systems programming, SoC, and Software Engineering.
Prior to joining Penn State, I got my Master of Science (MS) degree from The University of Texas at Arlington in Spring 2020, where I completed my MS thesis on ‘Randomized and Evolutionary Approaches to Dataset Characterization, Feature Weighting, and Sampling in K-Nearest Neighbors’ under the guidance of Dr. Manfred Huber, and I received my Bachelor of Engineering (BE) from PESIT Bangalore South Campus, where I worked on scientific data science with Dr. Snehanshu Saha(he has since moved to BITS Pilani, Goa Campus).
Outside of work, I enjoy playing the guitar and have a small music project called Circus of Apathy going on. I also like to perform standup comedy and I’ve performed at various open-mic events in Central Pennsylvania.
